Visiting Ann Arbor for job interview and found this place while exploring town. Awesome beer selection on tap and super friendly, knowledgable staff. Awesome place for great beer.

Cool little place for an afternoon pint. Good music, nice view and plenty of beer on tap. I'll stop by again on a game day.

Love the business model - I can actually taste the beers and find what I like. They actually mixed two beers together for me to get the flavor I was looking for. Can't wait to go back!

A neat atmosphere to go in & have a beer. We sat in the window and people watched. The beer list was nice, but nothing that "extreme". I knew most of the beers on the list and consider myself a moderate craft beer drinker. The prices were a little high. Most growlers were around $20, which I think you could pick up a six pack at most places for less. I think if this place lowered the prices or focused on getting the really really obscure beers they would set themselves apart. The staff were extra friendly and wanted to talk you through, plus they offered free samples. Due to the higher prices for nothing that is tooo out of the ordinary, I don't think I would go out of my way to go back. But the good atmosphere & nice staff made my visit worthwhile

Decent beer selection, just kiddie corner from Bills Beer Garden. They will let you taste two beers before you order. Okay atmosphere in the summer with the patio just across from Blimpys and Fleetwood diner. Pretty overpriced though. Cost us $20 for 2 beers and the mediocre truffle popcorn. Wasent worth it as we could go to Bills across the street for half that. The popcorn is not free like the sign in the photo offerings, but it should be. We would probably just stop at the store for some good beer before going back to Beer Grotto.

Stopped in two nights ago for a celebratory end-of-semester pint. Nice selection, though at least when we were there, not much you wouldn't see in the cooler of a well-stocked grocery or party store. That probably says more about how spoiled we've become about craft beer in Michigan (how did it come to pass that Bell's Two Hearted or a Founder's Rye would merit a shrug???) than about the Beer Grotto, but if you're looking for novelty, you may need to look pretty hard. Of course, that could change entirely in a matter of days. The seating is scarce (and the atmosphere not really conducive to unwinding) but the truffle-oil popcorn is great, the staff are friendly and generous with the samples, and you may be able to broaden your beer horizons here. Or not. I'll be glad to give them another chance to test my limits someday.

Friendly staff, plenty of beers to sample, a great indoor alternative to Bill's in the winter. They also have outdoor seating for sipping a beer on a hot summer day. It can get quite packed in the winter since on the inside it is not a huge space.

If you like good beer or popcorn, or both, or good people who like good beer and popcorn, or any combination of the three, it's a perfect place.
(5)Kathy T.
Incredible selection with excellent outdoor seating that only calls visitors and locals walking down the street. This location in Ann Arbor is laid back and comfortable - The place was so busy I only expect people to continue lining up for more!
(5)Katie K.
great happy hour, or should I say, "hoppy" hour. love that they let you have three samples everything before choosing a pint. I'm super indecisive and picky so it's great for me to be able to try everything first. growler fills are also priced pretty well. I just wish it had more seating.

If you want to taste a few beers and a couple of glasses of wine in a setting that promotes savoring drinks for just a short time, this is the place to go. There is no real bar counter. You order your selection at any of their registers and you can sit on stools inside the small building or if weather allows, you can sit outside by the sidewalk.

Jamie was tending the bar today and is a GREAT dude. There can't be a better bartender than he. He's so knowledgeable. Also gives generous pours :-) if you like beer, you will love this cozy, intimate craft bar.
(5)Amory D.
Great concept. The only thing to improve is the queue. There is a single line formation to order your draft. When only one person is tending, there is a logjam especially if a customer is doing extensive sampling. A conventional bar top would serve this place much better.

Awesome tap list!! I cant wait for the patio seating!! The staff is very knowledgeable and give great service. Ive been to the Dexter location as well and love the popcorn with truffle oil!

It isn't that I'm a negative person, it's just that I was expecting much better. There were fewer beers on tap than I expected for somewhere that presents itself as a beer bar: compare to somewhere like Ashley's or Hopcat. On top of that, there was very little seating and it wasn't a very comfortable environment to enjoy a good beer. Maybe it'll be better with outdoor seating in the summer. Until then, I'll be going elsewhere for beers out.

Decent beer selection (plenty of Jolly Pumpkin, though few unique or weird entries), emphasis on tasters (like a good ice cream shop), and a few little tables. Much smaller than Bill's Beer Garden across the way, and the small fence means much more road noise. Inside is pleasant, but outside feels much like drinking on the sidewalk. I like a good sour, and the Grotto seemed to offer two --- the only one the bartender knew off the top of his head was the Jolly Pumpkin iO saison. Good start, but I'll dig deeper next time.

WOW !! Beyond impressed with the Beer Grotto. This is one of the coolest places in downtown Ann Arbor - so authentic and filled the place is filled with a wealth of knowledge. Not only are the "Beer Geeks" incredibly knowledgeable but even on the first day of being open you can tell the patrons ( including myself) respect the beer and will have intellectual conversations. THE TRUFFLE OIL POPCORN - delicious beyond belief and the perfect addition to the beers. Currently it is free until the end of the month. I hope they keep the machine around. There is an area where you can purchase your own grotto's which are all different shapes, sizes and colors and some even have a keg tap on them! Taste It Love It Tote It - the cutest motto and light up sign in the shop. You walk up to one of the counters - and you get to "study" all the different beer options. You get to TASTE 3 of them - so cool especially for me whose new to the beer scene ...! I LOVE being able to learn something new, this place is just so awesome. I picked the one i was into the most - which wasn't hard because all three options were amazing - and i also tried one of my friends taster which was Fig Jam - wild a party in your mouth! We sat in the upstairs area which was perfect for our party of 3. Downstairs where you order had barrels you stand around which is super cute. Can't wait for the summer days when outside seating is available! Tote It - the beer geeks encourage you to take a grotto to go ! Score! Definitely will be back ... soon!!

For how small the Beer Grotto is it has a great selection of beers. Staff is always friendly and the truffle oil popcorn is an awesome snack. It's usually packed when I go, so haven't been able to take advantage of the outdoor seating but I love that they have the option! Great spot in AA to grab a beer with friends.

Small place good selection. A new favorite

I've visited the Beer Grotto a few times and really dig their simple setup. They feature a handful of carefully-curated beers and ciders on tap... and that's about it. The people working the taps are wonderful, especially when it comes to offering samples. They pour in a couple different sizes and their prices are super reasonable. There are a few tables inside and out for your sitting pleasure. I love their patio. It's perfect for catching some sun and doing a little people watching. The Beer Grotto is one of my favorite stops when I visit Ann Arbor. You should check it out if you like beer or cider in a relaxed setting.

This place is R-A-D, RAD. Conveniently located downtown within a ton of parking around, this niche place on the corner has it all: indoor seating, outdoor seating, and beer, simply beer. No fancy food menu to complicate things or endless lists of beers that makes my head spin, but a select list of beers that makes things easy. Instead of just simply listing the beers on tap, they categorized them into types such as sour/fruity, wheat ales, stouts, etc etc. The tap area is just what it should be, a counter with the taps right in front of you, not too far away so you can get idea of what you're in for. You're allowed to try a few different beers before choosing "the one" but the staff is more than knowledgeable about each one. I felt very comfortable and excited about my Arcadia "Whitsun" that was delicious and perfect for the afternoon on the patio. Speaking of, the patio was awesome. They did what they could with the limited but priceless outdoor seating area. The tables are a neat glass mosaic with high, large umbrellas to keep the sun from frying my ginger skin. The chairs were larger than the standard ones, allowing me to get comfy and enjoy the atmosphere. Great beer, great service, great location, great place.

Went here as a post game for a wedding with a few friends. I can't drink beer so I can't attest to how it was, but the selection seemed interesting. They had a number of local beers. The layout was different, with a few high top tables inside, a low counter and then a fridge with a selection on beers and ciders. Service was good. The guy behind the counter was willing to talk through each beer and figure out the best to fit what you were looking for. The truffle oil popcorn?? To die for. There's a cute little outdoor area to sit, talk shop and people watch but in the street right next to that was a whole lot of garbage... after a 90+ degree day. Ew.

SETTING: On the corner of the street with an outdoor patio. This place is laid back to the max. No pretentious people allowed! Could get crowded, but I wasn't rubbing shoulders with people who I did not know. Awkward/judgemental eye contact never happened and was always averted, so it was fine by me. Wine barrels were spread out to use as tables, but there weren't enough chairs! Unless people swiped them for their own group. Also catered to a diverse group of ages, ethnic backgrounds, etc! Thumbs up for diversity! DRINKS: Order up front. What I liked is that you could try 2 types of drinks to sample before deciding what to purchase. You also have an option of size for your drink. They make their own drinks too. SERVICE: For how busy it was, the staff up front with the ordering were patient and moved quickly. Efficiency at its best. IMPRESSIONS: I never quite understood why people would go to the bar to hangout. It's loud, dark, and sometimes dirty. Why don't we just hangout at our friend's place where I can hear you, see you, and not feel repulsed when I make a trip to the bathroom? Although I did not use the bathroom at BG, the other qualities make BG an exception. Sure it has many similarities to a typical bar, but the atmosphere is welcoming towards everyone, and it is pretty affordable, so you don't feel like you're breaking the bank. Just a good all around place to kick back and relax with your buddies. Oh, your place is too bright, quiet, and clean, so you want to go elsewhere? Beer Grotto? Okay, count me in!

Great beer selection of quality and friendly service. They let me taste a few beers to help me which is nice. They're also quite knowledgeable about helping you find something you like, a trait that seems to be missing at a lot of places. Seems to be strong emphasis on jolly pumpkin here. They have a good selection of European beers (Belgian style, German style), and IPA (of course). When I came here one Saturday afternoon it wasn't too crowded, but I can see how this place could fill up real quick looking at other reviews. Other than that, nothing but nice things to say! They also have a really nice patio where you can sit when the weather is nice (:

Opening day! The crowds are insane and it is impressive how many bearded men are here. That usually means good things for beer places. I tried the Fuego sour beer and it was delicious. A friend had the Le Freak IPA which he enjoyed but was surprised by the weakness of a tripel. Everyone generally enjoyed the beers and the vibe was social, yet relaxed. Also, they have some pretty delicious popcorn drizzled with truffle oil gratiz for customers. Just ask an employee while you are getting your beer! Check it out Ann Arbor!

Good selection of beers, especially Michigan beers. Knowledgeable staff. Great location. Designed tastefully. Awesome outdoor seating. The only semi-minor thing that would propel this rating to the rarely obtainable five stars is more seating at the bar. I like to chat it up with bearded men (don't we all?).

This a great new place we enjoy going to for a few drinks. It has a great selection of beer and wine and the staff is very friendly. You order your own drinks up front. They do not have a food menu but they do have truffle oil popcorn that is great. The patio and outdoor seating here makes this a great place to go to as well when the weather is nice.
